, pete williams, has been working this story all day. pete, what can you tell us tonight? >> reporter: brian, tonight authorities confirm there were two bombs, we know that much, but it's unclear how many others were planted. there were other suspicious packages. the word of another bomb elsewhere placed at the jfk library is apparently turning out not to be true. at least five other packages have been found on the street, have been deemed suspicious and are being destroyed, but this is no firm confirmation of whether they were actually explosive devices, although some officials tonight say there is reason to think that some of them were. we're told, by the way, that one of the two victims that was killed in the explosion was 8 years old. boston police say there was no specific intelligence warning of any kind of attack, and federal officials tonight say there is no reason to think that this is part of any larger threat. at this point they believe it is confined to boston, but a meeting tonight will decide whether any kind of national alert will be sent out. there is no suspect in cus

williams, our justice correspondent, pete, sadly, as i keep saying, we have way too much expertise in explosives and terrorism investigation over these past ten years. let us hope that we can put that to good use very quickly here. >> reporter: i think it's already turning out to be that way, brian. first of all, the initial analysis that there were two devices that went off and two more that they quickly found. now, what they're going to be doing now, of course, is proceeding on several tracks. there'll be a team of people who will go in there and try to pick up every little piece that they can of these devices. we believe for sure they were devices that went off. we don't know how much they're going to be able to get out of the other two. it appears that they very quickly in the term they use is rendered them safe. meaning that they shoot a high velocity, extremely short pulse water cannon at them to blow them up. we don't know how much look they got at them before that happened. in terms of the other ones, they'll look at the pieces. that's one track. the second thing they're do

williams who is live in washington. pete, what are you hearing about the investigation to the bombings in boston? >> right. it's all about putting pieces of puzzles together. first of all, the devices themselves are here in the suburban washington in the fbi's crime lab where they will try to reinstruct them. they believe they were carried to the scene in black nylon duffel bags and say that because of the weight that each device probably weighed 20 pounds filled with gun powder and shrapnel and in pressure cookers. you can see the brand name of the pressure cookers in a couple of the pictures that we have obtained. the second part of it is the pictures themselves that they are asking people to send in and they are getting a huge amount, so far, three terra bytes of data that is thousands of hours of video and still pictures. they want more. this is from our affiliate in boston. it shows in the first picture what appears to be a trash bag next to the green thing is a trash container and looking at whether the bombs might have been place inside trash bags to look less conspicuous and a
